Cloak of the Consort

By now the Scout has arrived at the top of the ladder and tumbles past the attacking araneas. They try to bite and spit at her, but she manages to dodge the attacks. Her spike chain is ready. Alvra and his lizard appear at the entrance of the room, attacking, while his brother is still climbing. Lilith, still waiting for an opportunity to climb up, speaks the command word which unleashes the spider that is magically bound to her shield. It animates, and a fiendish spider joins in the attack. When Jharrath makes his way towards the top, the Cleric is finally able to climb up too, following her spider.

Both Drow and lizard are engaged in a fierce fight with the araneas. The araneas, unable to use their magical abilities in close combat slash, lash out, bite and spit, and finally Phaedra manages to kill one of the spider-beasts. Alvra is less fortunate and misses repeatedly. The Scout takes advantage of the distraction, makes a flanking move and green blood spurts all around: the third aranea is down too.

While she investigates the room, a male Drow, dressed in very noble clothes, descends the stairway. His chainshirt emanates a soft glow, then red then blue. He is wearing the insignia of House Godeep. It is very hard to focus on the dark elf. Meanwhile Jharrath is on top of the ladder, ready to cast a spell that calls forth his elementals, while the Cleric makes her way up too.

but the Fighter’s will is too strong, he stays put. This instantly enrages the unknown Drow. An incredibly loud shout echoes through the cave. The Wizard recognizes it as a hostile spell and summons his monsters into the scene. The ear-splitting yell proves too much for the riding lizard of Alvra, which dies of sonic damage. They all are damaged and deaf by this evocation, except Lilith and her spider, who are still in the shaft. Though Jharrath’s elementals attack the Drow, they can’t seem to hit him – each time he is slightly out of place. A displacement spell?

Arriving at the platform, Lilith sends forth her spider, but it can’t bite through the Drow’s armor. The Xaniqos attack, but both the spiked chain and the javelins bounce off a sort of invisible shield. An earth elemental manages to breach the defenses, after which a Kellgore’s firebolt delivers further damage, but only a little. Something seems to temper the pain. A Melf’s acid arrow comes buzzing back towards the Wizard, after which, under attack by the earth elementals and Lilith’s spider, the Drow disappears from view. Phaedra tracks him up the stairs. She sees a large cave, filled with more boxes and crates. It looks like a lair. The cave is floodlit. Alvra also walks up the stairs, sword in hand, while Jharrath – still suffering from the acid arrow – first casts mage armor on himself and then sends his elementals in pursuit.

The fiendish spider manages to bite the Drow, but the male discharges a bolt of electricity at the creature and it gets killed. It immediately transforms into a buckler, once again on Lilith’s arm. The Cleric has made it to the stairs and starts moving upwards. Already at the top, Phaedra throws an exploding object at the male Drow’s feet, but he doesn’t seem to be affected by it. He counterattacks by taking out a wand and sends two rays of pure fire at his opponents, missing Phaedra, but hitting one of the earth elementals. The Fighter sees his chance, runs up and aims his javelin at the Drow.

Lilith sees her Wizard brother halfway up the stairs; he looks awful. To keep him on his feet, she extends a faith healing towards him. Feeling better, he goes forward and aims a spell of clumsiness at the male. But the Drow has spell ready: again he opens his mouth and releases another horrible yell. The earth elemental, grabbing the opportunity, immediately attacks and succeeds in hurting its target, but the damage is done: Alvra, Phaedra and both earth elementals are deaf. the wizard seems to be less affected. Unlike his siblings no blood is dripping out of his ears.

Finally arriving at the top of the stairs too, the Cleric dispells the Drow’s magic protection, until only his shield remains. Alvra wants to charge, but is obstructed by one of the elementals. He walks around it and hits the now more vulnerable Drow. The earth elementals join in, as well as Phaedra. Lilith suddenly grows eight tentacles, feeling Yochlol’s blessing, but before she can get her tentacles on the male, Alvra kills him in a ferocious attack. Under their very eyes, the corpse of the Drow changes into an aranea. It was a shapeshifter!

The Scout searches the lair and finds magical bracers, a ring, wand, two healing potions and a lesser restoration potion. There is also a key. She throws the wand at Jharrath and then uses the key to open a strongbox. Inside are two thousand gold pieces, ten garnets – worth hundred gold pieces each – and a golden vial with a ruby stop. But on top of those is a cloak. It shimmers and glistens, reflecting light and colors. By its aura she feels this might be the object they were searching for! Worn by a male, this artifact’s effect must be overwhelming. Lilith claims the cloak from the hands of her sister, their mission accomplished.

Vertical Fight

Alvra takes two new javelins from his backpack and keeps them within hand’s reach on his back. Accompanied by his siblings, he walks towards the thick strands of webbings in the far corner on the right. Soft whimpering sounds emanate from behind. With his sword, the Fighter hacks and slashes his way through, until they reach an oval chamber, filled with humanoid cocoons. Lilith tells her sister to clear a part of a cocoon, so they can see what’s in it. It’s a Drow! And he’s still alive.

I’m from House Shi’quos.

This fourth House recently took over another by necromancy and dark arts and is led by Matron Mother Ythesha’na. Shi’quos came to power in the Times of Troubles, just like their own House.

How did you get here?

Our caravan was waylaid.

And what were you transporting?,

the Cleric cuts in.

When the Drow refuses to answer that question, Phaedra slits his throat. The other cocoons hold four hobgoblins and one other Drow. The Xaniqos leave no witnesses behind.

They follow the winding corridor, Phaedra in the lead. After a while, the Wizard notices a hole in the ceiling with a ladder leading up, twenty-five feet above them. The opening is ten feet wide. When Jharrath sends up dancing lights, they see another corridor in the shaft. Soft voices filter down. The grappling hook is soon attached to the ladder, and when Phaedra climbs up, she see the head of an aranea. It releases a flashing ray towards the Fighter, but misses. The creature won’t react to Lilith’s suggestion spell, but it does get hurt by the Wizard’s magic missile.

Alvra leads his lizard up the shaft, where he comes face to face with the aranea, half spider half human. The beast’s fangs ricochet off the Drow’s armor. When Alvra pokes his head above floor level, he sees a room with luxurious beds and two more araneas. A stairwell leads further up on the far side. Then a glittering ray of enfeeblement hits him and he suddenly feels very weak.

Down in the corridor, Lilith calls up darkfire, while Jharrath yells to his brother to get back down. When Alvra has cleared the shaft, the Wizard casts a scroll of confusion. Weird gibbering can be heard from above and slowly fades. Another aranea checks out the area and Phaedra immediately fires her crossbow. Her shot is answered by the spider-creature: it spits a green blob towards the Scout. Lilith shoots her darkflame upwards, but misses. Activating his House insignia, has no noticeable effect on the Fighter. Jharrath unleashes a hail of stones upwards, hitting both araneas. One falls down, shrieking all the way, the other shoots a magic missile at the Wizard.

Lilith takes a moment to create a mass shield of faith to strengthen her siblings, after which Phaedra drinks an anti-toxin and climbs up. She is closely followed by her brothers. When the Cleric grabs the rope to climb up too, the ladder’s step creaks ominously. She quickly lets go and waits impatiently until the structure can carry her added weight.

Alvra guides his lizard over to the ladder and investigates the mechanism. It seems to move up and down, not horizontal, but there’s one lying next to it. The Fighter directs the wooden structure to the other side of the Abyss, creating a bridge for his siblings. With the help of Phaedra’s grapple hook and rope, they make a safety line to get down the slope and soon all four Drow are reunited on the east side. Lilith checks out the bugbear corpses and finds very powerful bows, as well as beautiful morningstars and chainshirts. She gives the collection to Alvra to carry them home.

When the sisters climb down the ladder, they are being shot at. Phaedra gets hit and tumbles down the ladder – right on top of the ettercap’s fat belly. The creature is as dead as a doornail, lying with its feet in the air on a sort of platform. When the Scout surveys her surroundings, she spots the archers – two bugbears – standing on the wooden structure, which is about ten feet wide. She takes out her spiked chain and readies.

Jharrath fires his wand of magic missiles at one of the bears, and the beast returns the favor with an arrow. Taken aback, the Wizard drops the wand, which falls down the ladder and lands on the platform next to Phaedra. He scolds the bugbear with every Drow curse he can think of and gets back up to cast Mage Armor on himself. Lilith climbs as far down as she can, while Alvra steers his mount down the west side of the abyss. Then the air around Phaedra shimmers, and five more Drow appear next to her, looking very similar to the Scout, right down to the spiked chain.

Of course the bugbear can’t withstand such an excellent challenge. It drops its bow and charges full ahead with its longsword. One image fades out of existence. The other beast joins in and smashes another mirror image to pieces with its morningstar, then another. Alvra hurls a javelin at the creature but misses, and his second attack barely misses his Scout sister. He orders his lizard to attack, but it doesn’t do any damage. The Scout shows him how it’s done and kills one of the bugbears.

Just when Lilith steps onto the wooden structure, the Wizard attempts to descend in double speed. He fails to hold on to the ladder and drops down. The Cleric steps aside just in time. Now both her brother and his wand are lying at her feet. She activates her flail and… goes for the remaining bug bear. Her flail’s special ability sets the beast on fire. Phaedra finishes it off with a mighty swing of her weapon. 

The platform is empty for now. Phaedra hands Alvra the excellent looking longsword of the bugbear, while Jharrath picks up his wand. The Cleric uses her healing powers on both Drow brothers. She still might need them.

Deeper Down

Phaedra loads her crossbow and walks down the riffle, while the spells casters stay atop. The aranea is nowhere to be seen. The monstrous spider on the right has landed in the caustic liquid and is thrashing about. It attacks in a frenzy. Though the claws are almost eaten away by the acid, its jaws close around Alvra in a bite attack. The Fighter immediately drives back his lizard and drinks a healing potion.

Suddenly a fire ball erupts near the still hanging monster, killing both spiders in one take. Jharrath aimed his spell well. The remaining ettercap stares and stares, unable to believe this turn of events. Then it spits a web over the lizard and runs off. Lilith casts a spell of blindness on the creature to prevent it from sounding the alarm. She seems to succeed, since the ettercap stops running. Alvra’s mount bites through the webbings, free once more. Phaedra climbs the walls, while Jharrath dismisses the acid caustic mire. Then the ettercap too suddenly disappears from view. The Scout goes after to investigate.

At her feet a slope of smooth damp stone ends in an abyss, twenty feet away. There’s still no sign of the ettercap. On the other side of the abyss is a wooden palisade, cluttered with bales and barrels – a watchtower hovering over it. The draw bridge is hanging useless on the other side, the pulley unreachable. Phaedra signals her sister to come closer. The slope makes it impossible for them to cross the black abyss, so the Cleric orders Alvra to go to the other side over the walls and ceiling. Halfway the Fighter gets stuck in another concealed web and even his considerable strength isn’t enough to pull free.

The Scout spots the missing aranea on the other side of the fissure, gesturing in a strange way. She shouts a warning to her brother, who is a sitting duck on his immobilized mount. Not a moment later Alvra is hit by three magic missiles; his lizard by an arrow. The result of another attack by a bugbear, which is hiding behind the crates. Jharrath sends a mephit over to the other side, while the Cleric casts dancing lights to reveal two more archers.

Though Phaedra tries to wound the aranea, the beast hurls a ball of acid at the poor trapped lizard. In an attempt to break free, Alvra surrounds himself with darkness and orders his steed to bite through the web, but to no avail. His sword has more success and he slowly advances again.

Meanwhile the fight rages on. A fierce breath attack by the mephit damages the bugbears, while Lilith’s ray of slashing darkness hurts it even more. Phaedra takes a stone from her backpack and throws it at the feet of the aranea. A sound like thunder echoes through the cave. Then two earth elementals materialize near the bugbears, and pummel one to death. When the salt mephit gets hit, it flies upwards and surprises the aranea with glitter dust. The spider creature is momentarily blinded. The Wizard’s fire bolt ends its life, while Lilith uses a darkfire spell to kill another bugbear.

When Alvra dispells his darkness, he is confronted with a hovering mephit. He instantly attacks, aided by his lizard, but the mount misses and is barely to hold on to the wall.

You idiot, that’s MY creature!

the wizard yells at his brother. Fuming, he dismisses it, while his earth elementals kill the last bugbear.

Web Strands

The Xaniqos Drow make their way out of the city and pass the same Priestess who granted them access earlier. She does look surprised. The new outfits have their effect: people look with respect at them and make way. They soon arrive at the City Gates and head north. The route takes them through inhospitable sceneries with less and less traffic and rumors are that further ahead there is a large empire of Undead north of the Dead Wastes. Geographically, the area is changing rapidly. The road becomes narrow and high walls enclose them. Caves are everywhere, some used, some old.

Phaedra keeps a steady lookout for signs of the fight and when they arrive at the scene, she notices that most tracks of the caravan have been erased. A broken cart, demolished with great force, is all that is left. Behind her, the Scout sees the cliffs where Erelhei-Cinlu has been built against. This side of the cliffs is very high, covered in deep gravel that leaves no traces behind. Most caves in the area are inhabited by small tribes, but these specific ones are too high. Only insects would live in the ones on the lowest level. When Phaedra examines the cart, she discovers pieces of web strands. Seems like someone has been trying to hide them. Jharrath casts a spell to determine if magic has been used, but the spell comes up negative.

Is the lizard able to climb this slope, Alvra?

the Clerc asks. The Fighter is fairly sure of it and steers his mount up the pebbles. The others follow as quiet as possible. When they are almost at the top of the hill, they see the head of a Goblinoid. It raises the alarm.

Intruders!

Bugbears

Alvra quickly urges his lizard forward to get a better grip on the unstable ground, and at the top encounters two surprised Bugbears. They don’t even get a chance to load their crossbows. Next to them is a form that looks like a human spider; a half Humanoid with legs and poison glands. The Drow immediately attacks one of the Bugbears and calls out to warn his brother and sisters. When Phaedra arrives at the top of the slope, she grabs her spiked chain and lashes out at the second Bugbear, killing it with one hit. The first Bugbear panics, throws down its bow and bolts, trying to reach the safely of the cave. Alvra sees his chance and lashes out with his sword, while his lizard finishes the job. Two dead Bugbears are lying still at their feet.

The other two Drow are still trying to reach the top of the slope, but Lilith’s armor is rather heavy and she concentrates on putting one foot before the other. When Jharrath sees the half Humanoid, he recognizes it as an Aranea, the result of a magical Drow experiment. The Aranea is a spellcaster like the Wizard. After a tactical retreat, it disappears into the cave.

Aranea

The black maw of the cave opens up to reveal a path sloping upwards. Thought there are less pebbles than outside, the ground is still not suited for a charge. Alvra grabs his javelin and hurls it after the Aranea. When he follows with the Scout, smears of blood tell them that it is wounded. Be careful with this creature, the Wizard says, it is a Shapeshifter, beware of its spells. Further up, the cave widens and becomes higher. The Humanoid disappears into the distance. It is very dark and the floor of the cave is made of irregular stone.

Lilith, who has finally managed to make it to the top, walks into the corridor and goes after the Aranea. The trail of green red blood is still visible. Seated on his lizard, Alvra climbs the walls and manages to get in front of the Shapeshifter, but at the same moment he feels resistance, web strands touching his face. The Drow and his lizard try to break loose and warn the other Xaniqos about the webs, when two monstrous spiders sink down from the ceiling. Behind them a third spider-like shape appears, smaller than the others. It has long arms and a spider head. With one of his spells the Wizard tries to aid his brother by spreading a layer of acid underneath the spiders. When one of the spiders reaches the ground, the acid bites into its feet. Together, the Scout and the Cleric stand ready, while the Aranea casts mage armor on himself. A massive fight is about to start…
